Let’s hope that da da kamera makes Montreal a permanent part of its itinerary. We loved Insomnia, presented at the last Festival de théâtre des Amériques. Monster confirms interest in work that compares favourably in terms of drama to the best of what English-speaking Canada does in terms of literature or cinema. Bring it on!

Le Devoir, 1999

Metamorphosis of an actor
Alone or in tandem, Brooks and MacIvor always surprise, and indeed Toronto’s alternative theatre scene bears the indelible mark of their artistic frenzy. They have again combined writing and directing to create a raging new solo piece. On a dramatically lit, empty stage rippling with musical tension, Daniel MacIvor is electrifying, playing fifteen characters (from a retired widower to a transvestite) living through a weekend on their cul-de-sac. From backyard to backyard, we move through the weekend toward Sunday night, a very particular Sunday night where, through a series of events, the cul-de-sac burns to the ground leaving nothing behind but a vague memory of its huge former universe. When everything comes undone, should we laugh or cry?
